2016 - 2017 Program of Events

September 2016 - LWV visited the Irish Consulate and learned about the Irish election process. The presentation generated much discussion comparing the Irish system with that of the US, including the pros and cons of both.

September 2016 - Presidential Mock Debate

October 2016 - Dr. Howard Wong, Executive Director, School of Veterinary Medicine & Director,
Centre for Animal Welfare, City University of Hong Kong, joined us for a fascinating talk on “One
Health” – what it is and how it impacts food safety, infectious diseases and public health.

December 2016 - Our annual holiday dinner in December was held at the Kowloon Cricket Club, where Board member Dr. Rosann Kao organized a private room. Our guest speaker, Ms. Tisa Ho, the Executive Director of and force behind the Hong Kong Arts Festival, gave us the inside scoop on the upcoming 2017 festival & what it takes to make it happen. Through the generosity of League HK members, we were able to donate HK $5,000 to the HKAF’s Student Ticket Scheme, which provides reduced rate tickets to students who could not otherwise afford to partake of the HKAF’s excellent and varied programs.

January 2017 - In January, we welcomed back returning speaker Ms. Christine Loh, Hong Kong’s Under‐Secretary for the Environment, who provided an excellent discussion of Hong Kong’s current waste management endeavors. Many of our members were very interested to learn the details of Hong Kong’s recycling efforts as well as how its waste treatment plants function.

February 2017 - In February, the League went to the theatre. We were fortunate to obtain a 50% discount on the cost of front and second row tickets to the Hong Kong Arts Festival’s production of "Women of a Certain Age" from “The Gabriels:– Election Year in the Life of One Family”. It was felt that a play based on the events of the 2016 US Presidential election was both timely and appropriate; sadly, the play turned out to be more of “One Family Discussion of Things Not Really Related to the Election.” Nevertheless, our members and many of their spouses did enjoy the outing.

March 2017 - In March, our guest speaker Ms. Xu Xi, renowned Hong Kong English language writer, activist
and author of The Unwalled City, Hong Kong Rose, Habit of a Foreign Sky and many others,
treated us to her take on Hong Kong in the modern world as she sees it.

May 2017 - May was the kick‐off to our 40th Anniversary celebration. Many thanks to member Beth Hall who worked tirelessly to research and create a presentation, and to member Rehana Sheikh whose knowledge of the League’s beginnings in Hong Kong proved to be invaluable. This meeting was held at the residence of the US Consul General at The Peak, with the Consul General in attendance.

Charity Brunch at Robin's

Letter from our treasurer!

Dear LWV members and friends,

I am sure I express the sentiment of all who attended yesterday's fundraiser brunch at Robin Ernest's home, that both Robin and Phyllis Lubbers did a fabulous job in putting together the very best home-cooked, gourmet southern brunch ever!  Thank you both so very much.  There are no words to express how delicious each and every dish was and how beautifully they were presented.  And please note that not only did Robin make available her beautiful home, but she and Phyllis generously donated all home-cooked dishes!

A warm round of thanks to all LWV members and friends for contributing to our first ever fundraiser.  All proceeds will go to the American Women's Association (AWA).  The AWA is a charitable organization, donating to a wide spectrum of causes throughout Hong Kong.  All money collected today will go to charity.

A very special thanks to all those members who were unable to join but donated to this worthy cause just the same.

We were very privileged to have Peter Maize as our guest speaker.  Thank you Peter for so graciously giving us your time to share with us your interesting insights into China and the region.

All "lucky draw" prizes were supplied by LWV members.

Please find herewith the list of contributors along with the grand total collected.

Hong Kong Container Port Tour

February 28- 2012

League members had the opportunity to tour the Hong Kong Container Port on February 28, 2012.  Fabienne Bertrand and Debra Joyce  organized the tour with Corinne Picut from Asian Express, one of the leading international moving companies.  We took a bus tour of the port, visited Hong Kong International Terminal (HIT) tower and learned more about the logistic operations and global network of the Hong Kong container port.  After the tour of the container port, we traveled by bus to Asian Express Shatin warehouse to hear more about the interconnections between the international moving business and the container port business through a simulation of an international move.

Below is a letter we received from Andy Mak, the Managing Director of Asian Express International Movers, Ltd., after the tour.
Dear Beth,
It was a great pleasure for having the opportunity of introducing to you and your members the Hong Kong Container Port Terminal and Asian Express International Movers Ltd. Though the schedule was tight, I do hope you all had a nice time during the tour and also a better understanding on how household goods are packed and steamship containers being handled and transported from Hong Kong to all parts of the world. For your information, the container terminal operates 24 hours non-stop and 365 days a year. Hong Kong is one of several hub ports serving the South-East and East Asia region, and is an economic gateway to mainland China. Hong Kong set a record in its container throughput in 2007 by handling 23.9 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units of containers), maintaining its status as the largest container port serving southern China and one of the busiest ports in the world. Some 456,000 vessels arrived in and departed from Hong Kong during the year, carrying 243 million tons of cargo and about 25 million passengers. The average turnaround time for container vessels in Hong Kong is about 10 hours. For conventional vessels working in mid-stream at buoys or anchorages, it is 42 and 52 hours respectively. The port has been one of the busiest container ports in the world for many years, and at times the busiest. It was the world's busiest container port from 1987 to 1989, from 1992 to 1997, and from 1999 to 2004.     As for Asian Express, we have spent 33 years refining our understanding of the fact that each and every move must be handled according to the very unique needs of each and every client. We have grown over the years to encompass over 250 highly trained staff members in 4 locations covering the main entry ports of Hong Kong and China (Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou). We utilize the very latest web-based information systems, and are accredited to the definitive industry quality management system, FIDI-FAIM (FIDI Accredited International Movers). And we are continuously striving to expand and improve our facilities, people and operations to better serve you, our clients and partners. Whether you are an individual moving to a new home across the city, a family moving with your children to another country, or a corporate Human Resources Manager in charge of ensuring their employees' personal treasures are safely shipped around the world, at Asian Express we are dedicated to making the experience as stress free as possible. Not only will we provide you with an efficient, time-conscious service, but we will listen and offer a helping hand every step of the way. Please find attached the group photo for your reference. More photos will be posted later on our website: www.aemovers.com.hk. Furthermore, I have received your wonderful gift from Corinne and wish to thank you for your most kind thoughts.     In the meantime, if we can be of any other service and/or assistance, please do not hesitate to let us know. Once again, thank you Beth for joining our tour, and look forward to seeing you again soon. Kind regards !

Welcome Back Coffee

U.S. Consul General Residence:  Consul General Stephen Young and wife Barbara Finamore
Consul Stephen Young spoke about the importance of 2012 elections all around the world.
Lawrence Jones was introduced as the Voter Assistance Coordinator, replacing Lisa Pitman.
Beth Hall introduced LWV Hong Kong Team members for 2011-2012.
Also introducing Sara Randt wife of American Ambassador to China Clark T Randt
The title wife of the American Ambassador to China may seem like an easy rank to pigeonhole. However, after a few moments with Sarah T. Randt, who has been wearing this mantle since 2001, the stereotyped presumption of power and diplomacy quickly disappear. Gracious and candid, utterly at ease and quick to smile, Randt permeates charm and spontaneous passion as she talks about her 25-year stay in China
