Dear League Board,
I have been in communication with Dianne Wheatley-Giliotti from LWVUS. I have informed her that we do not have a President for 2011-2012. For your consideration read her suggestion regarding evolving into a Leadership Team. If you have any questions you may email Dianne directly in my absence.
Regards, Beth

MINUTES OF THE 34TH AGM Annual General Meeting 2011
Minutes for the League of Women Voters of Hong Kong
34th Annual General Meeting
Tuesday, May 12, 2011
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center
The May meeting of the Hong Kong Unit of the League of Women Voters was held at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Center on May 12, 2011. Beth Hall, President, called the meeting to order at 11:30 AM. Beth welcomed all members, and went over the agenda for the meeting.
Phyllis Lubbers, Recording Secretary, read the minutes of the Annual Meeting held May 2010. These minutes were approved as read.
Sandra Collins-de-Lange, Treasurer, read the treasurer’s report, which was approved as read.
Next a check for $1,000 was presented from the HK LWV to Hong Kong UNISON.
In the absence of Loretta Cox, Program Chair, Beth Hall outlined the programs scheduled for 2011-12. A motion was made to approve the programs for the 2011-12 calendar year.
A vote was taken to approve the programs for 2010-11 and was passed unanimously. Beth mentioned that other program ideas are welcome, and to let the Board know.
Beth reported on the proposed Bylaw changes that Amy Van Laak had been looking into. Beth reported that the first three articles of the bylaws cannot be changed, so the requirement for lifetime membership remains at 50 years.
Beth distributed the President’s Report and read it aloud to the membership. She ended her report with a heartfelt thank you to the Board of Directors for their encouragement and support during her tenure as President, and presented gifts to each Board member to show her appreciation.
The 2011-12 Slate of Officers was announced and is as follows:
Position Nominee
President vacant
Vice President Loretta Cox
Recording Secretary Mary Chaney
Treasurer Sandra Collins-de-Lang
Membership Marti Law
Web Communication Amy Van Laak
Voter Services Patricia Biddle
No additional nominations were offered from the floor, and the Slate was voted on and passed unanimously.
Since the President position remains vacant, Beth explained that our chapter will function next year under a “Leadership Team” scheme, which will consist of five specific areas: Spokesperson, Advocacy, Money, Membership, and Webmaster. Since our chapter has monthly meetings with members as hostesses, those members will be directly responsible for the conduct of the meeting that month (the spokesperson). The hostesses will also be responsible for sending out the reminder notice for their specific meeting.
Marti Law, Membership chair, suggested that in order to increase membership each member should take two applications for LWV membership and try to actively recruit American friends and acquaintances when the opportunity presents itself. She said there are many Americans in Hong Kong who are unaware of our presence here.
Marjorie O’Brien, member, suggested a “Member-Guest” day, whereby each member would invite a guest for a specific meeting. December was suggested and could be combined with a holiday-themed meeting.
Other membership suggestions included sharing League information when participating in AWA activities, such as bridge, book club, and coffees.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:05 PM, and lunch was served in the Congress room. Champagne glasses were raised to recognize the 34th anniversary of the League of Women Voters of the United States-Hong Kong unit.
